We are Grade 6 students from JCID Shanghai working on our MYP Service as Action project under the theme Creative Environmental Stewardship. Our mission is to raise awareness about plastic pollution and take meaningful action through education, creativity, and community engagement.
For this part of our project, we are focusing on recycling plastic waste to protect wildlife and reduce harm to the environment. We aim to inspire others to rethink plastic use, promote better recycling habits, and explore innovative ways to give plastic a second life.
We chose to focus on plastic pollution because it is one of the biggest threats to animals in the ocean today. Plastic never fully disappears. It breaks into smaller pieces and stays in the environment for hundreds of years. These plastics harm marine animals who mistake them for food or get tangled in them.
We learned that over 8 million tons of plasticenter the ocean every year. That’s about a truckload every minute. Yet, most plastic items are only used once and thrown away. Our project aims to change this by collecting, reusing, and reimagining plastic waste into something new and useful.
Plastic waste damages important habitats like coral reefs and seagrass beds. Floating plastic debris blocks sunlight and introduces harmful chemicals into the water, which affects the entire marine ecosystem. By recycling plastic, we can help keep these habitats clean and safe for marine life.
Instead of only collecting trash, we are also creating educational art piecesand campaigns using recycled plastic. These help others understand the problem and see how small changes (like using less plastic or recycling better) can protect the ocean and the animals that live in it.
In our project, we collect used PET plastic bottlesand transform them into beautiful handmade flowers. Instead of throwing them away, we give these bottles a second life as something meaningful and decorative.
Each flower is carefully cut, shaped, and painted by us. We plan to sell themat school events and use the funds to support marine conservation causes. Through this creative action, we hope to raise awareness about plastic pollution and show that even waste can be turned into something wonderful.
